From the UK, you will drive directly to Durbach, a beautiful German village, just over the border from Strasbourg. You will have munched some miles today but can relax in 4 star comfort, and dine in one of the three excellent restaurants the hotel has.
The following day your driving holiday really starts with roads that wind through the German Black Forest, heading south and across the border in to Switzerland. Tonight you’ll be staying in the centre of the Swiss Alps, ideally located for tomorrow’s adventure.
It’s the highlight roads today, they don’t get much better for driving and scenery. You’ll conquer the St Gotthard, Grimsel, Nufenen and our favourite, the Susten Pass. We’ll highlight places to stop on the way for photos, refreshments and sheer astonishment. Did we mention you’ll be back at the same hotel tonight… so no need to pack your bags today 🙂
The final day of driving will take you to the Rhine Falls and into Germany – you’ll spend the day driving the fast and sweeping forest trails of the Black Forest, before making a final evening in Baden Baden. After a night to refresh, drive directly back to the UK the following morning – the drive to Calais from Baden is approximately 6hrs.
This self drive tour really is the best way to make a Road Trip to the Swiss Alps if your time is limited – if have more available time and wanted to extend your driving holiday we can add in additional days. This might be just an extra night in Baden Baden to explore the town at your leisure, or you may want another day on those epic mountain roads. Just ask if you want more!

Arrive in Durbach, Germany at our preferred 4 Star Spa Hotel. It’s 350 Years Old and owned by a petrolhead, all of which is reflected in the hotel. An advance dinner reservation is recommended.
Your driving tour kicks off properly today with some of our secret roads though the German Black Forest. You’ll make your way south through the forest, crossing the Swiss border, then skirting some beautiful Swiss lakes before arriving in Andermatt where you will be staying for 2 nights. The hotel is a modern 4 star affair, with spa. You have the option of upgrading to one of the best 5 star hotels in Switzerland.
Today is the ultimate in Swiss Mountain Passes… you’ll be driving the St Gotthard, Grimsel, Nufenen and Susten Passes. Each are different and all are stunning. You can make a day of it by stopping off along the way for photos and refreshments as you please, or do an early morning blast, take the day to relax in Andermatt, and head out again in the evening doing the route in reverse. The choice is yours.
After a gentle start through the Swiss valley heading out of Andermatt the delights of the Klausen pass lie ahead today. You’ll be working your way over to the world heritage site of St Gallen, via Mount Säntis (be sure to check out the cheese shop there). St Gallen’s not your usual tourist spot (from the UK anyway) so enjoy the architecture and cuisine the town offers. The 4 star hotel is centrally located in this Baroque hamlet, ideal for exploring.
The final day of proper driving sees you leaving Switzerland with a visit to the Rhine Falls, before picking up the famous and picturesque Bundesstraße B500 which weaves its way north through the Black Forest. We’ll highlight a few key places to visit along the way (including some very famous cuckoo clocks) before your final night stay in Baden Baden at a centrally located 5 star hotel.
Sadly it’s time to head home. Or is it? You could always extend your trip with an extra night in Baden Baden to experience what this affluent spa town has to offer, or maybe a stopover in France at a castle as you head back to Calais and ultimately the UK.
